Admit it, the Drug War is a Failure

Vancouver Anti-Prorogation Protest - Stephen Harper Won't Be Allowed to Shutdown Canadian Democracy!

Stephen Harper thought we wouldn't care if he shut the doors to our democracy so that he could avoid questions about what he knew about torture in Afghanistan and When he Knew it!

Today I’m going to post on a topic that is within the scope of Reeferlogic’s mandate but doesn’t get as much of my time. It’s the portion of our agenda related to hating neo-cons.

I have a large amount of hate directed towards the following Conservatives: Stephen Harper, Tony Clement, John Baird, Jim Flaherty, Lisa Raitt, Rona Ambrose, Rob Nicholson, Chuck Strahl, Stockwell Day, Vic Toews, Diane Finlay, Peter MacKay, Bev Oda, Jim Prentice, Josee Verner, Peter Van Loan, Gerry Ritz, Jason Kenney, Jim Moore, Leona Aglukkaq, Gary Lunn and Diane Ablonczy. I know there are more I hate but these ones pop to mind immediately.

It’s these supposed “leaders” that I eye with 100% disgust. They are waving their proverbial penis’s in the face of their constituents while not saying a damn thing about Stephen Harper’s prorogation of parliament. This action of Harper’s put a 2 month stop to Canadian democracy and canceled every bill and committee that was underway. A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. And these Conservative political leaders think it’s ok and we won’t care.

Now don’t get me wrong, most of that legislation was Conservative bullshit I never wanted to see written into law anyway, but it’s the flippant nature by which Harper threw all of that tax money away for his own self interest that drives me insane! How much did we pay all of those people to just have their work thrown in the trash? Probably enough to house a lot of homeless Canadians or give retraining to hundreds of out of work manufacturers. Instead Harper wasted it all, millions of dollars for sure.

Apparently Harper say’s he needed the time off to figure out the next steps in our economic action plan. BULLSHIT! Come on Steve, can’t you walk and chew gum at the same time? Canadian’s expect their Government to be able to multitask and not need to shut down parliamentary democracy to get work done. Parliamentary democracy aside, I don’t see Obama telling the US voters he’s going to pause their democracy so he can figure out what comes next with his economic plan. Do you know why Steve? Because that would be political suicide. And guess what Steve, you’ve just done that yourself. You will not recover from this miscalculation. You will be defeated in the next election. We are all tired of your bullshit and game playing with our democracy. This is the last straw. You have shown you can’t lead, in fact you have just shown us you don’t want to lead and you need to be replaced.

We didn’t get upset when it was revealed the Conservative party produced a guide for its members on how to slow down and delay the work of parliamentary committees. We should have been furious but we weren’t. I suppose that made you think we wouldn’t care if you pulled this move. You were wrong. We didn’t cause a big stir when you prorogued parliament not even a year ago to avoid being ousted by the opposition parties. That was different though Steve, we didn’t like the idea of a coalition government so we didn’t rock the boat. It wasn’t because we were ok with you weaseling out on your responsibilities to the people and not facing the music in the House of Commons. We simply didn’t want a coalition - so you got lucky. But now Steve, now you’ve gone too far.

And to show you how mad we are Steve, yesterday was a day of rallies across Canada in 60 cities as well as in London, England and a handful of US cities. The message we got out, and will continue to get out, is that we will not tolerate this behaviour from our Government. We expect more from our Government than cowardly avoidance tactics.

The time to replace Stephen Harper is upon us.

Thanks Stephen, your help in this matter is greatly appreciated, you douche.

2 Multi Million Dollar Marijuana Grow Ops Busted

After wiping the tears from my eyes I decided that I needed to write a quick blog post over the bust of two multi million dollar grow ops in Chilliwack B.C. this week.

Chilliwack Grow Op - What a Waste of Potential Tax Revenue

In my last post I pointed out how stupid it is of the B.C. government to not be pushing for the legalization of cannabis to address the 3 billion dollar budget shortfall we have. How much more proof do people need that doing so would generate tons of cash. Certainly enough to stop the cuts to our schools and hospitals. Multi million dollar grow ops illustrate the huge market for pot, thus the potential for huge sales and sin taxes for the government. Let us also not forget that by legalizing the pot industry we would also remove the money incentive for gangsters to run illegal grow ops in our neighborhoods in the first place.

Yet instead of looking at this proposal with an intelligent eye our politicians continue to waste police resources by busting illegal grow ops, we continue to ignore the winfall of cash that we could get by taxing the product, and we continue to cut important social programs for our society because we don’t have the money.

I can already hear the “What about the children” do gooders whining away at this logical proposal. Guess what do gooders - ask any kid and they’ll tell you they can get pot far more easily than they can get booze even though pot is illegal. Why? Because there is no profit in the booze industry for gangs, and a government employee selling alcohol won’t sell to kids. Therefor logic dictates that prohibition actually allows drugs to get to kids far more easily than when the drugs are legal and their distribution is run by the government.

So given that fact, and the fact that the vast majority of cannabis users are law abiding, tax paying citizens - why on Earth do we continue to pursue cannabis prohibition? It makes no sense to me - until you think about it from the political angle.

No politician has the balls these days to try and change our drug laws. Take a look at Obama. Prior to being president he was against the drug war. And now as president all he has done about it is stop refering to it as the drug war. All other aspects of the drug war game have remained the same.

In the Canadian context no political party will change our drug laws until the US does. Even when we see over 50% support by Canadians for legalizing cannabis - the government still does not act. This is because the US will not approve of such policies and when it comes up they threaten all sorts of economic related hardship that will arise from it, presumably due to a clamp down at the border to keep the evil cannabis plant out of their Country. Of course they already grow more than enough pot domestically to feed their pot hunger themselves but Canada would be a serious threat if we legalized weed. Give me a break.

Anyway, I wanted to keep this short. So I will, just make sure you hear my message. Pot isn’t a bad substance, it can actually heal. And it can certainly be taxed and better controlled by taking its sale and distribution out of the hands of gangsters. If only we had real leaders as politicians instead of total douche bags we might get our pot laws turned around and make pot a positive in our society instead of a negative.

US Tries to Save Face by Indicting Mexican Drug Cartel Leaders

Only 2 weeks have passed since Obama went to Mexico and attended a summit with Mexico and Canada’s political leaders - President Felip Calderon and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.  And this week we blatantly saw what they dicussed play out in the news media in the form of a government organized news event.

The US announced the indictment of  Mexican drug cartel leaders. Uncle Sam wants to bring justice to the leaders and other key players of the cartels. And apparently the US attorney general, Eric Holder, wants us to believe that this is more than just a symbolic act. Personally I can’t see how it could be anything but.

Does he expect us to believe that if they hadn’t announced these indictments they wouldn’t be able to arrest cartel leaders and bring them to justice? That they have no way to work with the Mexican government to have them extradicted without them being indicted now? Of course they could so this announcement is pure showmanship. 100% drug war public relations. Totally symbolic and changes nothing. Even if they do get the cartel leaders sent to the US it will take less than 1 month for the cartels to sort themselves out and have new leaders in place and tons of drugs flowing. And in the process the violence will probaby get worse. I guess to the US that is progress in the drug war??

It was pretty much inevitable that this type of media announcement would happen. The US is losing the war on drugs big time and they need to try and save face. US citizens are seeing the horrific prohibition fueled violence going on in Mexico and wondering what is being done about it. US political “leaders” never talk about drug prohibition aside from rediculous “tough on crime and drugs” rhetoric. Given that serious drug policy discussions never take place this issue is never a political hot topic. This makes the citizenry assume that everything is going good on the drug war front. Well, the news from Mexico rattles that sense of complacency in Joe the Plumber making a timely PR announcent the only response prohibitionist politicans can come up with to numb the concerns of the people.

Hopefully people are starting to see the failure of the drug war by seeing the devastation it is causing in Mexico and the fact nothing drug related is getting any better here at home. And BS PR stunts by our governments certainly aren’t going to change that.
