Admit it, the Drug War is a Failure

Rahim Jaffer - Lucky or Pure Slime Ball Politician?

Ex Conservative MP for Edmonton Rahim Jaffer got off on his drunk driving and cocaine possession charges today and instead plea bargained down to dangerous driving. Clearly this is BS. The cops laid charges feeling they had enough evidence to convict on both drunk driving and possession. So what the fuck happened? Why is he not facing the music like any other Canadian? I can’t wait to see this story play out further.

Vancouver Anti-Prorogation Protest - Stephen Harper Won't Be Allowed to Shutdown Canadian Democracy!

Stephen Harper thought we wouldn't care if he shut the doors to our democracy so that he could avoid questions about what he knew about torture in Afghanistan and When he Knew it!

Today I’m going to post on a topic that is within the scope of Reeferlogic’s mandate but doesn’t get as much of my time. It’s the portion of our agenda related to hating neo-cons.

I have a large amount of hate directed towards the following Conservatives: Stephen Harper, Tony Clement, John Baird, Jim Flaherty, Lisa Raitt, Rona Ambrose, Rob Nicholson, Chuck Strahl, Stockwell Day, Vic Toews, Diane Finlay, Peter MacKay, Bev Oda, Jim Prentice, Josee Verner, Peter Van Loan, Gerry Ritz, Jason Kenney, Jim Moore, Leona Aglukkaq, Gary Lunn and Diane Ablonczy. I know there are more I hate but these ones pop to mind immediately.

It’s these supposed “leaders” that I eye with 100% disgust. They are waving their proverbial penis’s in the face of their constituents while not saying a damn thing about Stephen Harper’s prorogation of parliament. This action of Harper’s put a 2 month stop to Canadian democracy and canceled every bill and committee that was underway. A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. And these Conservative political leaders think it’s ok and we won’t care.

Now don’t get me wrong, most of that legislation was Conservative bullshit I never wanted to see written into law anyway, but it’s the flippant nature by which Harper threw all of that tax money away for his own self interest that drives me insane! How much did we pay all of those people to just have their work thrown in the trash? Probably enough to house a lot of homeless Canadians or give retraining to hundreds of out of work manufacturers. Instead Harper wasted it all, millions of dollars for sure.

Apparently Harper say’s he needed the time off to figure out the next steps in our economic action plan. BULLSHIT! Come on Steve, can’t you walk and chew gum at the same time? Canadian’s expect their Government to be able to multitask and not need to shut down parliamentary democracy to get work done. Parliamentary democracy aside, I don’t see Obama telling the US voters he’s going to pause their democracy so he can figure out what comes next with his economic plan. Do you know why Steve? Because that would be political suicide. And guess what Steve, you’ve just done that yourself. You will not recover from this miscalculation. You will be defeated in the next election. We are all tired of your bullshit and game playing with our democracy. This is the last straw. You have shown you can’t lead, in fact you have just shown us you don’t want to lead and you need to be replaced.

We didn’t get upset when it was revealed the Conservative party produced a guide for its members on how to slow down and delay the work of parliamentary committees. We should have been furious but we weren’t. I suppose that made you think we wouldn’t care if you pulled this move. You were wrong. We didn’t cause a big stir when you prorogued parliament not even a year ago to avoid being ousted by the opposition parties. That was different though Steve, we didn’t like the idea of a coalition government so we didn’t rock the boat. It wasn’t because we were ok with you weaseling out on your responsibilities to the people and not facing the music in the House of Commons. We simply didn’t want a coalition - so you got lucky. But now Steve, now you’ve gone too far.

And to show you how mad we are Steve, yesterday was a day of rallies across Canada in 60 cities as well as in London, England and a handful of US cities. The message we got out, and will continue to get out, is that we will not tolerate this behaviour from our Government. We expect more from our Government than cowardly avoidance tactics.

The time to replace Stephen Harper is upon us.

Thanks Stephen, your help in this matter is greatly appreciated, you douche.

INSITE Court Decision Deals Strong Blow to Prohibitionist Drug Policies in Canada

Insite can remain open indefinately

Today marked a significant victory in the war against the war on drugs. Today the B.C. Court of Appeal decided that Vancouver’s safe intravenous drug injection site, known as Insite, has the legal right to operate because the addicts that use their services have the right to pursue medically necessary measures to treat themselves. This constitutional right to seek treatment for medical issues supersedes any law that the government may pass - and that includes drug laws.

Since opening in 2003 Insight has been offering a clean location with clean needles and trained medical staff to assist addicts so that they can use their drugs in a manner which is monitored and far safer than back alley injecting. Insight also reduces the harm that the non drug using community faces from discarded needles and public intoxication. And that’s just for starters. A number of studies have been conducted since Insight opened and here are the results:

  • Insite is leading to increased uptake into detoxification programs and addiction treatment. (New England Journal of Medicine)
  • Insite has not led to an increase in drug-related crime, rates of arrest for drug trafficking, assaults and robbery were similar after the facility’s opening, and rates of vehicle break-ins/theft declined significantly. (Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy)
  • Insite has reduced the number of people injecting in public and the amount of injection-related litter in the downtown eastside. (Canadian Medical Association Journal)
  • Insite is attracting the highest-risk users – those more likely to be vulnerable to HIV infection and overdose, and who were contributing to problems of public drug use and unsafe syringe disposal. (American Journal of Preventive Medicine)
  • Insite has reduced overall rates of needle sharing in the community, and among those who used the supervised injection site for some, most or all of their injections, 70% were less likely to report syringe sharing. (The Lancet)
  • Nearly one-third of Insite users received information relating to safer injecting practices. Those who received help injecting from fellow injection drug users on the streets were more than twice as likely to have received safer injecting education at Insite. (The International Journal of Drug Policy)
  • Insite is not increasing rates of relapse among former drug users, nor is it a negative influence on those seeking to stop drug use. (British Medical Journal)
  • Insite is preventing overdose deaths and reducing hospital visits (The International Journal of Drug Policy)

Insite is North America’s only harm reduction site of this nature and it has proven to meet its goals. The war on drugs can’t make that claim, and it will never be able to. Given this court decision I expect to see safe injection sites in all major Canadian cities within 3 years. And that my friends is the beginning of the end for drug prohibition.

I believe Canadians will start to see that alternative policies that don’t involve jailing people and throwing away the key work better. No system is perfect for dealing with drug use but the fear mongering, misinformation, overzealous cop model of drug policy has utterly failed.

I am so thrilled by this decision. Ever since Stephen Harper’s Conservative douche bags came to power Insite has been under constant threat of being shut down simply because it flies in the face of modern Conservative ideology. Harper’s base is staunchly anti-drug and even though Conservatives are the minority of Canadians they hold the key to power for Harper so he’ll make sure they stay happy. And nothing would have made them happier than getting Insite shutdown, regardless of how much good it may have been doing for the Downtown Eastside.

I’m so glad this court decision ruined all of those Conservative’s day - it’s about time they got punished by God for being such cruel and misguided Christians. Certainly Jesus wouldn’t be trying to shut down a place like Insite that does so much good. So why is Harper and all his Harperlings trying to?

At least now we know for sure that they won’t succeed.
